STAR Physical Therapy is offering a specialized program for the treatment of TMJ disorders. Each patient must be treated differently depending on the uniqueness of his or her problems and the contributing factors. It is very important to realize that the goal of TMJ treatment is to minimize pain and maximize function. TMJ conditions are not "cured", but are managed. The basic goal is to allow the muscles and joints to heal through rest and care. Often damage to the joint itself cannot be reversed, but the body can often heal it enough to return to function without pain. We also want to teach the patient to recognize the symptoms early and manage them once we have given him or her the tools to do so. The clinical examination includes a thorough patient history, postural exam, cervical spine evaluation, and both TMJs are evaluated for range of motion abnormalities and assessment of trigger points in the area of the face and upper cervical spine. Following the evaluation process, a rehabilitation program is designed to meet each patient's needs and goals. The physical therapist works closely with the patient's dentist, especially if splint fabrication is needed to help reduce the patient's symptoms. We believe that by using a team approach, the patient will have the best opportunity to return to normal work and social activities without a reoccurrence of symptoms.
