 Patients with low back and neck disorders comprise a large percentage of STAR referrals. To address the demand for excellence in spine care, a great deal of the continuing education provided to STAR clinicians is spine related. Many STAR therapists are certified in the McKenzie method of spine rehabilitation.
The McKenzie method incorporates a subjective history and objective testing, including repetitive movement evaluation, to yield a diagnosis and treatment plan. Beginning with a complete history, the therapist can build a treatment plan around the patient's pain generator using the McKenzie Classification System. Crucial to the treatment plan is the repetitive motion portion of the evaluation. The patient is taken through a course of sagittal plan or coronal plan motions to determine the directional preference of the pain generator. This process, in conjunction with the patient's history and objective findings, is used to classify and treat disc disorders.
Several of STAR's clinicians have been trained, via a rigorous educational program, in the Ola Grimsby method. The Ola Grimsby system incorporates a wide spectrum of education, including elements of manual therapy, sports medicine, neurology, and radiology. Patient evaluation emphasizes functional analysis, and tissue diagnosis. Treatment programs include soft tissue techniques, joint mobilization (generally and segmentally), modalities, and prescribed exercise regimens.
